here are some ideas for y'all if you're creatively stuck. an enema, so to speak.
1) loosen your grip. the eye of perfection (the social eye) can be soo-per cruel. every now and then, you just need to loosen up. physically loosen up. feel your flesh hang off your bones. doodle. freewrite. forget about meaning, significance, "if it's good." sometimes you just need to let it all out, no sphincter.
2) blank out. forget your work. just go and do something on auto-pilot... ha, for many/all of us, maybe that's what we're all doing anyway... but, in any case, try to do something that ALLOWS YOU TO CONNECT with that aspect of yourself that is essentially EFFORTLESS. ever see salamanders/crocodiles just float like logs?
3) try something different and fun. if you can't, see #1. my idea for a new frontier, presently, is looking at drawing software/animation software and making little stupid cartoons that i can eventually critique and get all hung up over... or, have you ever tried garage band (MACS rule!!!)? it is really neat, you could waste a lot of time just listening to the synth settings! point is, there are a lot of other ways you could LESS EFFICIENTLY waste your life away.
now if i could just follow some of these time-tested rules...
but seriously, i am thinking of doing #3. lately, i've been trying to reconstruct radiohead's "reckoner" on the keyboard. maybe, via garage band, i can add in other instruments as well? the singing's impossible, practically falsetto. my vocal chords are not designed to hold that sort of tension. oh well. maybe i'll post some random soundscapes, muzack, every now and then. but i've made promises before.
