nobody ever gets what's coming to them.
in heaven, as on earth,
money and privilege
and the blood of the invisible
and adulterated
grease the hidden wheels.
they've been spared the hard choices
the compromises
the sacrifices
steering lexuses
with leather-gloved hands
on leather-gloved wheels
they tap the controls
and the flies are brushed off
the windshield.
so has it been,
so shall it be,
forever and ever amen.
don't hold your breath.
life ain't no cinderella story.
and i never heard of a phoenix
springing from these ashes you sweep
and are.
they'll never get what's coming to them, you see.
but we'll try to live right
anyway
not for revenge, or for reward
but because it's the only
justice we'll find:
that we can choose
to be good
in a choiceless world.
