In the most recent manga chapter, we learned (from Itachi Uchiha) the sinister origins of Madara Uchiha (the most powerful member of the Uchiha clan, and the co-founder of the Hidden Leaf Village). Madara had a younger brother, apparently, and the two of them were equal in power. Both developed the Sharingan Eye, to the level of the Mangekyo Sharingan Eye (this means, by the way, that both killed their closest friends, because that apparently is a requirement for the opening of the Sharingan). Madara then experienced the curse of the Mangekyo Sharingan, which was that progressive use of its formidable powers eventually would lead to blindness. In the grips of despair at his steady loss of sight, Madara reached out to his younger brother and stole HIS eyes, replacing his own with them. In this way, he was able to maintain his eyesight, while keeping the Mangekyo Sharingan (his brother's).
This leads to Itachi's revelation of why he sought to "cultivate" his younger brother Sasuke's hatred for him; like Madara before him, he wished his younger brother to develop to the point of the Mangekyo Sharingan, so that he (Itachi) could then steal the younger's eyes.
... Funny thing was: Madara's younger brother resembled (if only via the sloppy black hair) the young Rinneigan Eye user, Pain (his "original" name escapes me at the moment). Whether Madara's nameless younger brother was indeed Pain, or whether Pain is somehow the progeny of Madara, I do believe that Pain's identity has something to do with Madara himself. After all, it is Madara Uchiha who is the true leader and founder of the Akatsuki; Pain is simply the "puppet on the throne" so to speak...
Perhaps, in the "evolution" of Madara (it is assumed that, for him to live as long as he has, he must have "stolen" several eyes or several lives), some strange transformation occurred in the Sharingan Eye, converting it to the Rinneigan... I'm not certain of this... But again, I posit the hypothesis that Pain is the brother/spawn of Madara Uchiha.
There. I said it.
We'll see if my theory holds out.
